Everybody does support Tue, 2009.08.18

This is something that has been in my head since the Rational Software Conference in June…

With the advent of all the social networking opportunites out there, it has become evident to me that support for a company’s products is no longer just limited to the official support organisation. Granted, that organisation is still required as there is a need for customers to call in when they are faced with a problem – we can’t get away from that! However, we must also recognised that our customers are also part of one, and often, many, social networks.

In such a new world order, it belongs to us to become aware of what is being said about our company and our products and to take action when one feels it is required. That action can be to either speak out ourselves – if we have the knowledge – or use our companies networks to inform people who would need to know. And when problems are brought up and discussed in social network fora, we might want to get our support organisation involved!

Does that open the door in our organisation for “social networking monitors”? Perhaps that is not a bad thing!

If there was any doubt about IBM Rational re-insertion in the systems space after the announcement that we intend to acquire Telelogic, these should be put to rest with the announcement made yesterday that New IBM Technologies Help Developers Build Safer Software!

This announcement mentions the new version of Rational Systems Developer, which is now available from Passport Advantage as well as from the support site.

So what is new in RSD 7.0.5? Here’s a quick list:

  • Improved rectilinear routing
  • Configurable Modeling UI
    • Viewpoints let you reduce the UI to only what you need
  • Rich text support for documentation, notes and comments
  • Modeling Reminders
    • “TODOs” for incomplete models
  • Diagram building using drag & drop queries
  • UML 2.1 support improvements
    • Support Information Flow elements (UPDM requirement)
    • Deployment Diagram enhancements
    • Sequence diagram editing enhancements
      • Message and message subset reordering
      • Resizable lifelines
      • Enable/disable message numbering
      • Choose message numbering format
  • BIRT-based model reporting
  • Model analysis and metrics
  • C++ support enhancements – CDT 4.0
  • UPDM

Of course, you also need a testing tool in this space and that’s Rational Test RealTime, which is also mentioned in the article. If you do embedded systems development, you should not have to live without it!

Well, I’m moving too… Tue, 2006.11.28

After Kelly, it’s my turn to move out… From this point on, I will be blogging from my new WordPress blog. I will be manually transferring some of the posts I already have here, but there will be no further updates…

Why am I moving? Well, first of all, the editor actually properly recognises HTML. I can type in HTML and I will not see my entries mungled. Also, I find the themes are nicer, and perception is fairly important on the web!

See you at the new location!

Or rather… Hello WordPress world!

I had started blogging out in Blogger World. However, a fellow IBMer and blogger, Kelly of Kellypuffs fame moved her bog over here. This prompted me to wonder why. Well, after a few online and offline recommendations, I have decided to try this environment a try.

Actually, this is the first test. I am writing this using the HTML editor, where I write everything in HTML (I like the control it gives me over the typography). If this behaves correctly (i.e., according to HTML rules), then I will be more than happy. Else, I will have to keep on looking at the advantages that WordPress has over Blogger (asides from its independence from Google, as someone suggested).
