I have just been too busy lately and I missed an occasion to blog about this. Well, a few weeks back, the European Commission approved the acquisition of Telelogic AB by IBM (links 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and many others…). Now comes the part where IBM needs to convince the shareholders to part with their stock. And then…interesting times!
RSD and UPDM: Enterprise Architecture for Systems Wed, 2007.12.19

Steve Hovater has just published to developerWorks a great article on using the new UPDM functionality in RSD 7.0.5. The article takes you through a short introduction to UPDM, followed by the creation of a small model, and concluding with the use of Eclipse BIRT to create the associated DoDAF views.
If you are into systems development or enterprise architecture, I would recommend you take a look!

According to InformationWeek, IBM And Microsoft Have Dueling Visions For Software Modeling. However, the article only compares Rational’s contribution to the modeling space and seems to completely ignore other Software Groups contribution. The Microsoft part talks about proprietary models that drive business execution directly. That is all fine, but there is no mention of WebSphere Business Modeler (WBM). In WBM, the organisation can be modeled and then code (BPEL) can be generated to drive WebSphere Process Server. Granted, there is a “code generation” step, but it is a lot closer to the Microsoft model than the comparison the article makes with the use of UML. IBM has a richness of environment to help our customers with their various needs – and this article seemed to only concentrate on a piece of our offerings.
And of course, the recent IBM announcement was in regards to the Complex Systems space and Olso is apparently geared towards IT. I wonder how Microsoft’s Oslo would fare in the development of complex systems?!?

Re: IBM digs in with Eclipse for weapons | Reg Developer Fri, 2007.12.14

Well, it seems that someone at Reg Developer (IBM digs in with Eclipse for weapons) has seen the announcement regarding the new Systems Tooling announcement I blogged about earlier this week.
There is a bit of sensationalism in there. Granted that these tools can be used to develop weapon systems, they are also used in many other industries not so bent on destruction. I know, the announcement did seem to highlight aerospace and defense systems. And UPDM is based on DoD and MOD standards. But even UPDM is now much more of an Enterprise Architecture tool than one specifically dedicated to the military. This may seem a bit apologetic, but I hope it is not. I was in and I have worked with the military. I just think it would be a disservice to the technology to pigeon-hole it into just that domain when it could apply to much more.
Finally, the EU investigation into IBM’s intent to acquire Telelogic has not been delayed indefinitely, as the Reg Developer posting indicates. The EU has now set a new target date of March 19, 2008 for the completion of the enquiry.
Systems are go! Thu, 2007.12.13

If there was any doubt about IBM Rational re-insertion in the systems space after the announcement that we intend to acquire Telelogic, these should be put to rest with the announcement made yesterday that New IBM Technologies Help Developers Build Safer Software!
This announcement mentions the new version of Rational Systems Developer, which is now available from Passport Advantage as well as from the support site.
So what is new in RSD 7.0.5? Here’s a quick list:
- Improved rectilinear routing
- Configurable Modeling UI
- Viewpoints let you reduce the UI to only what you need
- Rich text support for documentation, notes and comments
- Modeling Reminders
- “TODOs” for incomplete models
- Diagram building using drag & drop queries
- UML 2.1 support improvements
- Support Information Flow elements (UPDM requirement)
- Deployment Diagram enhancements
- Sequence diagram editing enhancements
- Message and message subset reordering
- Resizable lifelines
- Enable/disable message numbering
- Choose message numbering format
- BIRT-based model reporting
- Model analysis and metrics
- C++ support enhancements – CDT 4.0
- UPDM
Of course, you also need a testing tool in this space and that’s Rational Test RealTime, which is also mentioned in the article. If you do embedded systems development, you should not have to live without it!

The Solution Center Tue, 2007.06.12

Yes, I know, I’m Canadian and I used the American spelling…but that’s the way it’s written here, in Florida…
Yesterday was the opening of the Solution Center. That’s the area where IBM and our partners have booths to show off our stuff – although typically without professional “booth babes” – this is IBM after all! Here, the booth babes/hunks can actually discuss the technical aspects of their products!
I am manning a pedestal in the Tech Preview lounge, hidden behind a hip-high half-curtain, at the far back of the room. Well, we’re not exactly hidden, but there is reduced traffic because it is at the back and the entrance to the “walled-off” area is also at the back, away from traffic flow. At least, there is a food table and bar nearby…
Not that it made any difference – I did not manage to have time to grab a bite! Yes, I was that busy! And that is a good thing!
So what am I showing? New technology, of course! I have some interesting stuff to show regarding architecture management of complex systems, how SOA fits within the systems space (where the techniques behind SOA have been applied for years and years), and about embedded development technology. No. No product announcements. This is just technologies with which we are “playing” and that could potentially make it into a future product. This effort gives us a chance to show this stuff to our customers and to gauge their interest and get their feedback. This helps us determine whether our direction and thinking is right.
Oh! You want to know more?!? Unfortunately, I can’t really discuss this in an open forum like a blog… But if you are at the conference, come and see me (and my other tech preview lounge and solution center colleagues, but my stuff is nicer…)!
IBM to acquire Telelogic Mon, 2007.06.11

Now this is big news in the Systems space!
Very early this morning, IBM has announced its intent to acquire Telelogic AB. I would recommend you have a look at the press releases around this.
It was also announced this morning during the Rational Software Development Conference keynote address by Rational’s general manager, Dr. Danny Sabah. Being in this space, I feel a bit bad for Watchfire’s acquisition last week as it got a bit eclipsed…
Of course, as an IBM employee, I can not comment much about this. However, this is just an intent and still has to pass some conditions before it happens. So for now, it’s business as usual!
I guess this means people may stop asking if we are serious about the systems space…or at least, I hope!
First half-day behind me – already! Sun, 2007.06.10

The conference is off to a good start, after a few coffees…at least, they are serving Starbucks coffee.
So I did meet with two systems customers thus far and they have provided good feedback regarding our direction, what their immediate problems are, and where we should be going (please, no jokes here…). There was also an interesting speech during lunch (buffer conference food, not much to say). The major problem, however, was the quality of the sound. It was simply terrible for those of us sitting in the back. I have no idea if it was better in front, but it certainly did not give a great impression! It was also a very generic, “feel-good” presentation. Not much to learn, but a decent overview of the industry.
If you are at the conference and would like to talk to me regarding where you think IBM Rational should be going in the systems space, please post a comment to this blog (or leave me a message at the message centre). I would certainly be pleased to hear what you have to say!
Next week: RSDC 2007! Tue, 2007.06.05

Until last year, I had not missed a Rational conference since Seattle. I was always one of the last ones to sit down on opening day. Last year, I was doing governance stuff, and I did not get to go. This year, I am back at it, bringing Systems Development to the masses – at lease, the RSDC attendees.
RSDC is in Orlando, FL. More precisely, at the Swan and Dolphin, right next to Epcot – yes, on the Disney lot. This may seem exciting, but if previous conferences are any indication, I will not have time to see the attractions. This year, I will be manning the Systems tech preview pedestal in the solution centre^H^Her. And if you want to see what we will be doing, you will have to some and see me. And if you’re really nice, I may even give you nice demos…
I guess I should really take that occasion to start blogging again. I have been rather sporadic. Mostly because of work (and process…).
One of the interesting aspects of this year’s RSDC is that many events will be held in Second Life. IBM has spent a lot of money within this virtual world and I guess we need to expand our (already large) presence. I do have an avatar in SL, but I can’t access from my laptop. I hope there will be computers at the conference where I can get it – but I would probably have to let customers have their fun…
Traveling on vacation Wed, 2007.03.14

I’ve been on vacation for a week now…kinda…
We decided that it was time for the kids to meet my spouse’s extended family, which meant a trip to Turkey (Istanbul to be precise). We have been planning this for close to a year, using airline points to pay for the travel. On the way in, we have experienced, in order, weather delay (Ottawa to Toronto), equipment problems causing a 2 hours delay (Toronto), a kid with air sickness (Toronto to Frankfurt), a missed flight because of earlier delays (Frankfurt), a still sick child (Frankfurt to Istanbul), and one piece of delayed luggage out of four (Istanbul). Of course, with the delays, the youngest’s nap time no longer lined up, so she was very cranky… And finally, we did not manage to reach my father in law in time so he waited for close to five hours at the airport. All in all a good trip…
The other interesting thing was that, as Canadian, I needed to pay a US$60 visa to enter Turkey. I haven’t had to pay for a visa in ages (I think Kuwait was the last one…)! And it is, by far, the most expensive visa to enter Turkey! I wonder, why does Turkey not want Canadian visitors? We are not traditionally dangerous…
I am writing this as I sit in Ankara’s airport. I came here for a day to talk to customers – I get to play evangelist and I get one more day of vacation later. And, most importantly, I get to help our Turkish team with the message that IBM Rational is back in the systems space. However, the account team may not be so sure about my visit, it seems I have brought the bad weather (rain) to Istanbul and that I have done the same to Ankara (snow). I may get a reputation with this…
And that is why I am actually able to create this post: no family obligation and no one to tell me to get off the computer!
