As part of RSC2009, we have been encouraged to use Twitter to promote the conference, as well as to report what is happening… So I broke down and got a Twitter account.
You can see the result of my efforts in the new tool I have added in the right column in this blog.
My tweeting tool of choice, at this point, is Tweetie, both on the Mac and on the iPhone.
Hopefully, network connectivity at the conference will be good (i.e., better than last year) so I can do live tweeting!

Once again, the Rational Software Conference is being held at DisneyWorld in Orlando. Except that this year, we have lost the “Developers” (or was it “Development”?)! No matter, same location, new content – and even more content this year with all the Telelogic stuff from their Innovation 2009 conference! Two conferences for the price of one. In case you are wondering, here is the agenda as a Wordle graph (Thanks to the incomparable KellyPuff in her professional personna for this!):
More information on the conference site!
If you go, look me up!

There I was, doing so well, blogging from RSDC…and then nothing…
Well, my laptop’s video died! It started having nice, multi-colour bars all over the screen. This basically meant that I was SOL for the rest of the conference. OK. I could have use the terminals that were provided to the attendees – if they had not been taken down!
So what happened during these few days incommunicado? For one thing, I was attacked by a bird. And not even a big bird. I took a walk in the evening and must have strolled close to a nest because this bird suddenly started bombing dives, hitting me with its wings. It was an interesting adventure.
I also managed to get a bit of shopping done at Downtown Disney – I can’t be away from home for a week and not bring back some “souvenirs” (although I saw nothing of Disney World)! My only complaint were the prices! They must be making a huge profit on merchandising! But then, the smiles on the kids was worth it!
On the plus side of the laptop failure is that I got to enjoy the flight home without feeling like I had to do some work.
I must be getting old… Wed, 2007.06.13

In the end, I did not make it to SeaWorld…
By the time 16:00 rolled around, I still had not lunched, so I took off for a bite to eat (suchi — yum!). Afterwards, there was just no way I was going to go to the special event – and I had made plans to meet up with some people around 20:30 instead. Well, I took a short nap in my room only to wake up around 21:30. I guess I missed my appointment… Oh well! I’ll go get a glass of milk and off to bed…for real this time.
Oh! And my schedule went pretty much as I indicated this morning. This must have been the busiest I have ever been at one of these conferences, and it was my eight.
Busy, busy, busy… Wed, 2007.06.13

Yesterday was a big day. Started at 7:30 with breakfast and it went on until 00:00…midnight…too late…
I had meetings with customers, hands-on-workshop (helping/proctoring), more customer meetings, meeting with partner, teaching a partner how to use our tool, solution centre tech preview lounge, analyst demos, last minute demo prep for a customer (which I ended up not giving – that may happen today), and a customer dinner.
Today, I have a customer meeting, an internal strategy meeting, a board of advisors meeting, the last solution centre session, a partner meeting, more customer meetings, and the special event tonight.
This year, we’re going to SeaWorld.
I’ll need a vacation after this…

Rebuilding and optimising VMware images…
How glamourous!
I use VMware extensively to prepare demos. It’s just easier to revert to a snapshot after a demo and quickly be ready to run the demo again with a “fresh” installation! This is especially important if running against development code that is not fully tested, as I am doing at the conference.
However, when you have a VMware image that has multiple, branching snapshots (and an older laptop), it can take a while to switch between snapshots. Typically, in a one-on-one customer situation, this is not an issue. I would typically be there to show some specific functionality and do not have to switch snapshot. And if I do, I can always engage them in conversation about other topics. But at a conference pedestal, I do not have that luxury. I need to be able to switch quickly. Well, that meant that I had to clone my image into multiple ones as this is faster than restoring a snapshot.
I was actually surprised at how quickly and painless that was – and I ended up with smaller, faster images! Nice functionality!
On the other hand, producing a small demo movie took close to 2 hours on the laptop… Can I get a Mac?!?
Still jazzed up! Tue, 2007.06.12

Jazz is still attracting a lot of attention at the conference – and so it should!
Jazz is a great platform that shows a lot of promise – maybe even more than Eclipse did, and that’s saying a lot!
If you are at the conference, do enquire about Jazz. Even better, go to the reception and live poster session tonight (after visiting me in the Solution Center, of course)! You will get a chance to meet with the developers and learn a lot about this endeavour!
If you are not at the conference (and, if you are a Rational customer, why aren’t you?!?), then go to the Jazz web site and learn more about it!

Yes, I know, I’m Canadian and I used the American spelling…but that’s the way it’s written here, in Florida…
Yesterday was the opening of the Solution Center. That’s the area where IBM and our partners have booths to show off our stuff – although typically without professional “booth babes” – this is IBM after all! Here, the booth babes/hunks can actually discuss the technical aspects of their products!
I am manning a pedestal in the Tech Preview lounge, hidden behind a hip-high half-curtain, at the far back of the room. Well, we’re not exactly hidden, but there is reduced traffic because it is at the back and the entrance to the “walled-off” area is also at the back, away from traffic flow. At least, there is a food table and bar nearby…
Not that it made any difference – I did not manage to have time to grab a bite! Yes, I was that busy! And that is a good thing!
So what am I showing? New technology, of course! I have some interesting stuff to show regarding architecture management of complex systems, how SOA fits within the systems space (where the techniques behind SOA have been applied for years and years), and about embedded development technology. No. No product announcements. This is just technologies with which we are “playing” and that could potentially make it into a future product. This effort gives us a chance to show this stuff to our customers and to gauge their interest and get their feedback. This helps us determine whether our direction and thinking is right.
Oh! You want to know more?!? Unfortunately, I can’t really discuss this in an open forum like a blog… But if you are at the conference, come and see me (and my other tech preview lounge and solution center colleagues, but my stuff is nicer…)!
Yesterday was…interesting… Tue, 2007.06.12

As some of you can imagine, yesterday was rather interesting after the announcement that IBM intended to acquire Telelogic. Being a product manager in the systems space, this meant customer questions at the conference. It also meant sudden, last minutes, internal meetings to ensure everyone understood what it meant, mainly “business as usual”.
In general, I have received good feedback regarding this – and I think it is a great opportunity for both companies. Of course, I can’t make any plans regarding this (or anyone else at IBM for that matter) as it has not yet happened…but one can not help thinking…
IBM to acquire Telelogic Mon, 2007.06.11

Now this is big news in the Systems space!
Very early this morning, IBM has announced its intent to acquire Telelogic AB. I would recommend you have a look at the press releases around this.
It was also announced this morning during the Rational Software Development Conference keynote address by Rational’s general manager, Dr. Danny Sabah. Being in this space, I feel a bit bad for Watchfire’s acquisition last week as it got a bit eclipsed…
Of course, as an IBM employee, I can not comment much about this. However, this is just an intent and still has to pass some conditions before it happens. So for now, it’s business as usual!
I guess this means people may stop asking if we are serious about the systems space…or at least, I hope!
